Disaster can strike at any time. The best way to protect yourself and your pets is to be prepared BEFORE something happens. Here is a list of items to have available in case you and your pet must leave your home in an emergency:
- Your veterinarian's information - if you are unable to reach your regular veterinarian, you can call 1-888-PETS911 (1-888-738-79110 and they will help you locate a vet.
- Pet carrier or cage for each pet.
- Two weeks' supply of food and water.
- Non-spill food and water bowls.
- Vacination and medical records, medications and dosing instructions in waterproof containers.
- Pet first-aid kit.
- Cat litter box and litter.
- Newspapers.
- Plastic bags for waste disposal.
- Paper towels.
- A current photograph of each pet.
- A pet tag on each pet - make sure you have your home and cell number on the tag - if you do not have a cell phone, include a friend or relative's number in case you can not be reached.
- Leashes for each pet.
- Can opener.
- Votive candles and matches.
- Flashlights and spare batteries.
- An old blanket.
- Cash and/or credit cards.
- Tranquilizers or familiar toys to calm your pet.
- List of hotels/motels that accept pets in an emergency.
- A Pet Emergency Card in your wallet in case you are not able to speak for them.
